I heard the song “Video Killed the Radio Star, by the Buggles (link here, lyrics here)on the radio the other day. It occurred to me that there should be a more up-to-date version specifically about YouTube and the changes it seems to be making to the video world. Well I guess someone did…a few years ago. This link (go here!) is more of a generalized “Internet killed the Video star” type of thing, but its connotation isn’t quite right for the affect YouTube is making on the media world. Whats irking me about all of the stuff thats been happening to the internet over the past 10-20 years is that the internet is just becoming another delivery system for audio and video. With “Wild Bill (Gates)” touting how he is going to become a media mogul and how Microslop is going to be at the forefront of all of that just seems to highlight that fact. I’m all for change and all that, but this seems to be, to me to be taking a few steps backwards. The Internet as just another competitor in the world of content delivery systems, competing with cable and satellite? It should be more.
